Those headline conferences are proudly complemented by a strong line-up of specialist events, including the Gold Coast Investment Showcase, RIU Resources Investor Roadshow, RIU Essential Energy Conference, RIU Uranium Investment Day, South-West Connect ASX Showcase & TechKnow Invest Roadshow.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

From the Chairman - Simon Hadfield

It was in October 2000 that a man bearing a strong resemblance to Danny DeVito marched into my office in Subiaco.

“I want to do a resources conference with you,” he said.

“My business, Vertical Events, and your business, Resource Information Unit; we will work together and we will do it well.”

Danny DeVito turned out to be a gentleman by the name of Stewart McDonald and so was born RIU Conferences Pty Ltd.”

A couple of decades later we have produced two of the most successful resources conferences in Australia, RIU Explorers Conference & RIU Sydney Resources Round-up.

Stewart, originally a Kalgoorlie boy with a background as an accountant and mining company secretary, turned out to be an excellent manager, who has built a great business conducting investment conferences all over Australia.

Resource Information Unit, better known as RIU, was a mining publishing business which published mining magazines, including Gold Gazette and the Australian Mining Register, commonly known as the industry bible. That business was launched by well-known mining journalist Ross Louthean in 1976 with some initial backing from Lang Hancock.

In the days before the internet, releases from the ASX arrived twice a week in big envelopes from Sydney as the source of stories for the magazines and research for the Mining Register. Now all that information is available instantly on the internet at the click of a computer key and those hard copy publications have become a relic of the past.

We often get asked what RIU in RIU Conferences stands for, and now you know. The old-timers remember it well. The new generation not so much.

Recently, Resource Information Unit and Vertical Events were merged into the one business, RIU Conferences Pty Ltd. Jaxon Crabb, who has been working with Stewart for the past 14 years, has been appointed General Manager, and Stewart is retiring from his active role. He & I will remain owners and directors of the company.

Footnote: Stewart would like it made clear that he is a good five inches (13cm) taller than Danny DeVito.
